07.04.22 Michael Thieke & Hogir Göregen (clarinet / percussion) DE/TR + DJ Christof Kurzmann with "Jazz & Whisky"

Concert curated by Joel Grip & Antonio Borghini, Au topsi Pohl Berlin

We would like to present two strongholds on improvisation quite unique to Berlin. We will hear a solo each, as well as a collaboration, of master percussionist originally from eastern Turkey, Hogir Göregen, and master clarinetist of echtzeitmusik, from Germany, Michael Thieke. We will hear improvisation attacked from different angles. The risk of play is the common source of energy resulting in sounds and tempi as much familia as new to our ears.
Hogir Göregen, a specialist on traditional Kurdish/Turkish and Indian music is also a well known member of open minded barock ensembles as well as performance, new music ensembles. Michael Thieke, with his distinguisched precise sound, is heard in the european scenes of new music and jazz.
Their extreme ability to listen and react put no limit to what they will create together after hearing them solo.

21.04.22 Jasna Jovićević & Annette Giesriegl (sax, bass clarinet, flut / voice) SR/AT

curated by Elisabeth Harnik

Annette Giesriegl and I have been musical friends for many years. Since she told me about her new collaboration with Serbian sax player Jasna Jovićević I couldn't wait to hear this duo that already looks back on intensive interdisciplinary experiences and adventures. In 2018, they developed the musical concept for the site-specific performance "Improvised Events" at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb. Another site-specific project initiated by Croatian conceptual artist Andreja Kulunćić took place on the notorious prison island of Goli Otok, which was realized in Rijeka in 2021. Their musical language, whose origins lie in jazz, is a wide-ranging field of diverse communication possibilities on their instruments and electronic devices. Both musicians are connected with the free improvisation scenes in Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia, that receive far too little attention in our concert landscape!

05.05.22 obdo: Frédéric Blondy & Thomas Lehn (piano / analogue synthesizer) FR/DE

curated by Franz Hautzinger & Isabelle Duthoit

Thomas Lehn and Frédéric Blondy did their first concert in duo at festival Fruits de Mhère. It’s a nice coincidence and good opportunity to hear this beautiful vibes again.

We decided to invite Frédéric Blondy because he is an important musician and organizer in the french scene. He is the artistic director of ONCEIM, a large ensemble of 35 musicians, he was organizing the festival CRAK and some concerts series les rendez vous contemporains at Eglise Saint Merry in Paris. His music and his personality are really generous and open. He has a strong engagement about humanity and music. His way is always in movement. He is a real partner of music, life, beautiful soul. He lives in Burgundy where we are also based.

Thomas Lehn is one of the greatest analogue synthesizer player. His music is totally connected with body and spirit. His music world is totally free. He is also involved in organization with Comprovise festival first in Köln and now in Vienna.

19.05.22 Elisabeth Harnik, Clementine Gasser, Vasco Trilla (piano / cello / percussion) AT/CH/IT

curated by Elisabeth Harnik

I've had drummer Vasco Trilla from Spain on my radar for a while now and have been following his work with great interest. His unique sound on drums and percussion is very close to my approach and it is no coincidence that he had also reached out to me as we both respect each others work, but then came the pandemic... What could be better after the vacuum of the last two years than to invite a new musical partner and my longtime playing partner Clementine Gasser, whose work I appreciate very much, to a new trio communion. A meeting at eye and 'all ear' level can be expected!

09.06.22 Mariá Portugal & Angelica Niescier (drums, voice / sax) BG/PL

curated by Elisabeth Harnik

In 2020 I met Mariá Portugal at the Moers Festival. She was improviser in residence at the time and we rehearsed and performed together in Silke Eberhard's 'all female' ensemble 51%.
For the concert at Celeste she will meet world-class saxophonist Angelika Niescier, who was the first city musician in Moers in 2008. Their duo - a format in which female musicians are still significantly underrepresented – explores the boundaries of improvisation intensively, sometimes spontaneously and powerfully, then again with surprisingly filigree layering of melodic motifs and rhythm fragments.

23.06.22 Joe McPhee & John Edwards
(sax / double bass) US/UK

curated by Corinne Studer

I invited Joe Mc Phee & John Edwards to this concert series because they played in 2019 at Artacts in St. Johann - an intense and beautiful concert that impressed me and the rest of the audience deeply. It was even for them a big suprise, how intense that duo is - it's to say that they know each other and playing together since decades in numerous free jazz and improvisation formations around the globe.
Joe Mc Phee and John Edwards have both a deep friendly soul and a lively and sensible musical expression, playing and improvising every moment with a beautiful lightness and strong presence and spirituality.
This concert was originaly planned in dezember 2021 at the club Blue Tomato in Vienna - where it could not happen because of covid restrictions. Unfortunately Blue Tomato had to close down end of 2021 after 39 years of great concerts! I am really greatful to have the opportunity to fill that gap a little and present that duo for the first time in Vienna.
