When Marion Kalter (Salzburg, AT, 1951) talks about photography, she actually talks about people: personalities who captured her interest when she was a young journalist, including Gisèle Freund, Anaïs Nin, Nadia Boulanger, Susan Sontag, Gina Pane, and Joan Mitchell; individuals to whom she was introduced and whom she interviewed. In the mid-1970s, she befriended other photographers at the Rencontres de la Photographie, Arles, and assisted them as a translator: David Hurn, Mary Ellen Mark, Marc Riboud, and Ralph Gibson. The gig opened her eyes to a different vision of photography: not merely a recording instrument but also a medium of interpretation and recollection. In the late 1970s, she embarked on her second career, devoting herself to making art. The exhibition Deep Time showcases her still-growing oeuvre.
