Dorretta Carter has been captivating audiences in Vienna and beyond for many years, since moving to Austria from her native England. Growing up in London, a child of Jamaican parents, Dorretta Carter’s early sources of musical inspiration were soul legends like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder. The influence of such charismatic performers has clearly had an impact. Seldom has a singer had such a fine understanding of how to touch and rouse her audience.

Carter is wonderfully versatile singer, easily able to glide between jazz, soul, funk, and pop, or blend them all together at once. She has toured throughout Europe and the USA with her band Dorretta Carter & Her Funkmonsters, performed as vocalist of the fusion group Sketches, and is a frequent frontwoman for the unique, innovative brass ensemble Heavy Tuba. She has also worked with such high-profile artists as Working Week, Osibisa, Wayne Shorter, Bolo Bolo and Jennifer Rush.

Whatever the occasion or setting, you can be sure that Carter will connect with a crowd, if only because the music compels her to. As she says herself, “music is my life: I cannot imagine a life without music. Within my music, I can express my thoughts, feelings, emotions and moods. It has always been my most ardent desire to inspire and move others through my music. It is why I am a musician.”
